This archive contains the third version of the database of net.people
pictures. This version contains 4372 pictures in a format acceptable
both to NewsGrazer and Mail.app. The pictures fall into three
categories:
1. Pictures converted from the faces database on ftp.uu.net. All of
these pictures are of pretty high quality as they were converted from
mostly 108x128 pixel 8 bit grayscale images. To preserve aspect ratio
these images had to be converted to 48x64 pixel images which leaves a
small blank strip on one side of the image in programs which expect
the standard 64x64 pixel images. 3419 images fall into this category.
2. Pictures converted from the faces database on iuvax.cs.indiana.edu.
Originally these images were 48x48 pixel b/w, so their converted
versions are of fairly low quality. Still, in most cases they should
help you recognize the person in question. 909 images fall into this
category.
3. Pictures created for the NeXT. These images are generally of the
highest quality. Unfortunately there are only 44 of them.
Installation:
Before installation make certain that there is enough disk space on
your disk. The complete database requires almost 5 MBytes and consists
out of about 4400 files all in one single directory. Creating,
moving, removing or even listing that many files can take some
patience even with a fast hard disk.
After unpacking the archive move the complete created People directory
to /LocalLibrary/Images. If you already have a tiff database in that
directory move the files from that database to the new People
directory then move the new People directory to /LocalLibrary/Images.
Making the database available to NewsGrazer only requires a symbolic
link from /LocalLibrary/NewsGrazer/People to /LocalLibrary/Images/People.
Mail.app needs two additional files in /LocalLibrary/Images/People to
be able to use the database. These are /LocalLibrary/Images/People/passwd
and /LocalLibrary/Images/People/aliases. Both of these files have been
pre-created in the archive and unless you add new tiffs to the
database you should not have to worry about either of them. If you do
add new tiffs to the database, just re-run the mkpassalia script in
the People directory. It will automagically update both files.
Changes from the v1 to the v2 of the database:
1. About 800 new low resolution tiffs were added to the database
2. All of the low resolution tiffs ( 48x48 pixels, 1 bit b/w) were
converted to 64x64 pixel 2 bit gray scale tiffs. That slightly
improves the impression the images give and removes that ugly border
around the images when they are displayed in Mail.app or NewsGrazer.
3. About additional 1400 images were converted from the high
resolution faces on ftp.uu.net. The resulting images are of much
higher quality than those previously included from the faces database
on iuvax. They are however 48x64 pixel tiffs, so if you display one
of them in Mail.app or NewsGrazer you will get a margin at the right
hand side of the image. These images largely replaced lower quality
images which were in the database previously.
4. Despite the growth in the size of the archive, the disk space used
for the installed images has not increased by much. Virtually all the
pictures are smaller than 1 kByte which means that they will use up
one block of disk space. The difference is that the old low resolution
tiffs only used about 450 bytes of the block which was allocated to
them while the new higher resolution tiffs actually utilize about 900
to 1000 bytes of their kByte. There are about 800 new tiffs, so the
used disk space will increase by about 800 blocks.
Changes from the v2 to the v3 of the database:
1. This is basically a "bug fix" version. During the compilation of
the second version about two thousand high resolution images got lost
somewhere and so many of the low quality images did not get replaced
as they ought to have been. This went unnoticed until the moderator of
the purdue archives pointed out to me that some images had not been
updated (Thanks, Allen !). This has been fixed and now there are
mercifully only few of the low quality images left.
2. A small number of images were added.
3. There were about 50 duplicate images in the last version. They have
been replaced by hard links.
Plans for the future:
1. Future versions of the database will at least also be available as
incremental changes to this version of the database.
2. Due to frequent request: I will hopefully finally get around to
digitize an image of myself and put it in the database, too. :-)
Disclaimer:
I did not create these images. I did not originally compile most of
this database. It was converted from several original databases using
a few shell scripts which converted the files to names acceptable to
NewsGrazer/Mail.app. I've not looked at all the converted images,
although a random check of a few dozen of them has not revealed any
errors.
Thanks:
Thanks to Steve Kinzler for helping me locate all the pictures for
this database. Thanks to Jef Poskanzer for writing and making freely
available the set of image conversion utilities which made this
database possible.
